Looking East and West

Memories - May 07

I wrote to my friends:

Over on rumor queen their is a thread on sweet waiting stories (to balance out the "what is the dumbest thing any has ever said to you"thread)

I thought it was a good waiting topic, so here are my most recent warm and fuzzy stories. The second is my ah gosh how cute one.

Two sweet waiting stories:Story one: Well, I have not actually told most people we are adopting. I wanted to wait until we passed review room, and when the wait stretched out it got to being a long kept secret.

Our company policy says you need to inform the company you are adopting when you application is approved, so I took that as when CHINA approved it in the review room. That happened on Feb 2. So, I pull together all my courage and go into my boss's office and close the door...He gives me a very concerned look because LAST time that happened it was not a good thing at all. I reassured him that this was not a bad thing, but I had a personnel notice I needed to give him. I am over 50, so THAT got his attention. I was really apprehensive, because this is going to be a real inconvenience to my employer. When I told him we were adopting he just got this huge smile and told me congratulations, how wonderful, Joe and I have so much to give to a child. Now a word about why China, why at my age – nothing buthappiness for us and for the child. My boss does not say much, so itwas great!

Story two: Our neighbors just took legal custody of her niece and nephew. They are about 8 and 11. When they arrived 5 months ago we were in the middle of adding a new bedroom to the house, and we explained it was to make more room for the little girl we are adopting from China.

I guess that really stuck in their head. Last weekend the youngest(boy) came over and asked me when our little girl from China was going to get here. I had to explain it was a long wait and they should think about Thanksgiving or Christmas. His sister has joined him by then (in fact I am betting she put him up to asking the question because she wanted to know). They looked SO disappointed. They then asked me how old she would be. I told them between 14 months and 3 years.

They looked shocked, and it occurred to me they were hoping for someone closer to their own age. But after thinking for a while the little boy brightened up and told me that in that case he would just have to teach her ABC's and her times tables. At this point I am trying really hard not to completely break up. I mentioned that it would be a bit early for times tables, but ABC's were a good idea, and of course we would have to teach her english.

It never occurred to them that a little girl from China wouldactually only speak Chinese. The look on their face was absolutely priceless.

So to finish this conversation, these nice little kids told me theywould love to help decorate the nursery. Then they ran off home.

Honestly, what sweet kids. They are really excited to get a newneighbor and I bet they will make nice friends and protectors. And English teachers.

(PS - the eight year old just had his 10th birthday)
