OK then - we seem to be doing the frozen China tour. Today was the Jade factory (and I did buy a little Jade pig because JJ was born in the year of the golden pig - Mr M got one of the little perfune (well I hope it is perfume) bottles painted inside and had the chinese characters for Li Piao's name painted inside. Then on to the great wall - where we saw actual snow frosting. Apparently the real snows are next month (whew). This was pretty darn cold because ithas a higher elevation than the city - and the wind whips down the canyon. The guide told us that the traditional bed in this area is a raised structure of tile and bricks - a fire is built underneath and heats the platform in the winter, and the tile is cool in the summer. Sounds a little tough to sleep on but otherwise cosy I guess. We finished off with a drive by the Olympic Bird Nest and Water Cube. In this event we partked for 5 minutes, ran out of the buses to take photos and ducked SWARMS of freelance street sales persons with kites, postcards, and who knows what else. One of our party did not make it back into the bus fast enough and - well see photo for sad result. The evening ended with a local "flying acrobat" show - it was outstanding, but Mr. M could not sit still - he had to get up and pace the lobby. the reason for this is tomorrow we get on a plane, go somewhere even colder than this, and meet JJ for the first time. Pray this will be easier for her - she is old enough to reallly feel the stress of losing her old life. Pray for our patience and understanding as well. OK all - one more sleep then JJ!. |
