OK, so a little about our family.
Mr. M is a retired school teacher. He is hanging out, doing some volunteer work and wishing our China princess would arrive.
I have this job working as an IT manager for a local government. Most of the time I love this job. Notice I said most of the time. Right now would be an exception. Nuff said about that!
We are outdoor people and yard people. My favorite time killer is a nice long hike. My favorite place is Yosemite. And we both love yard work. This is somewhat of a surprise for Mr. M because he is a real city boy and lived in apartments and condos until we married. And you do have to keep an eye on me or I will take something apart or start a remodel project.
Then there are the 3 Queens. We have 3 lovely and demanding cats. I often remind Mr. M there is a reason female cats are called Queens (ours are altered though - no worries).
Two we got on purpose. That would be Annie (shown) and Amy (named by Mr. M after his two fav female aviatrix, Ann Morrow Lindberg and Amelia Earhard Putnam. We used his favorite names on the cats!) Annie and Amy are sisters and a very bonded pair. The sleep together on cold nites, groom one another and have the occasional Kitty Smack Down when bored.
#3 was my grandmothers little companion animal. When my Grandma's old cat died after 16 years she really missed him, but at Grandma's age no one wanted to commit to a new cat. However, one of my Cousins must have gotten the idea that Grandma was really lost without her old cat, so he called the local animal shelter and orderd a cat. What the rest of us thought does not need to be repeated. But the shelter selected and brought over Sable.
Sable's chief claim to fame is a wonderful soft tortie coat of fur. Other than that she is a scrawnly little cat - under 7 lbs. when we got her. And she had been slammed in a door and has a paralysed hind quarter. Not to mention a chronically weepy little eye. Luckily she has a fantastic temprement - she LOVES people, loves to be touched and petted, purrs for anything. It is easy to see why the shelter selected her for a compantion animal.
When the time came and my Grandma passed away 3 years ago (right before Christmas and just after her 92nd Birthday) we went out to where she had lived in the High Utah Desert to help my Mom and Uncles clean up Grandma's house. This poor little cat was TERRIFIED of all that activity, and Mr. M fell in love with the scrawny scared little thing. So Sable got valium and made the long drive back to So. Cal. with us. Getting Annie and Amy to accept this stranger was a major undertaking. And before long we realized this cat drank and wet A LOT. You guessed it - she is a diabetic. The vet says this is the youngest diabetic cat they have ever seen.
Wonderful.
And then we had to have 1/2 her teeth taken out to top it off (severe dental issues). So, in 2 years we spent more on little Sable than on the other 2 combine in 12. Plus, we have to give her an insulin shot 2 X per day, so our travels are somewhat confined these days. We need to be home 8am and 8pm most days.
All good practice for when we have the princess in the house to consider. We expect she will have lived at an orphanage most or all her life, and it will be important for us to provide schedule and structure while we help her adjust to a new and different life.
